Fishing net factory to open in March

: A Rs.30-crore fishing net factory, being constructed at Muttathara here, would be inaugurated in March, said Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar.

The Minister was addressing the gathering after distributing the first instalment of financial assistance to fish workers for housing, house renovation, and construction of toilets in colonies of Poonthura. He said the 525-tonne capacity factory would provide nets at affordable prices to fishermen in Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari, Kollam and Alappuzha.

The financial assistance was for construction of 49 houses in New Colony and 21 houses in IDP Colony, while 16 houses in New Colony, 54 in IDP Colony and 47 houses at Attinpuram would be renovated. Eighty-five toilets would be constructed in these areas. He said the environmental impact assessment for the Poonthura fishing harbour was progressing.
