Fire outbreak in shop: Man charred to death

A 75-year-old man was charred to death after a home appliance and furniture shop near Kattakkada caught fire early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Surendran Nair of Poovachal. The incident took place at Pezhummoodu. The fire outbreak was reported by nearby residents by around 1 a.m.

Surendran, a relative of the shopowner Rajeev, was asleep on the premises when the fire broke out. Two others who were also asleep in the two-storey building had a miraculous escape, an official said.

Around 10 fire units were pressed into service from the Neyyar Dam and Nedumangad fire stations to douse the fire. The body was shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital here. Short-circuit is suspected to have caused to the fire, though the actual cause is yet to be ascertained, official sources said.
