Rs.5.9 crore collected as traffic fines

As many as 4,19,852 people were booked by the police for various traffic offences in the State during April and Rs.5.91 crore collected from them as penalty. The police nabbed 14,870 for drunk driving, 24,464 for rash driving and overspeeding and 33,454 for not wearing seat belt, according to the Additional Director General of Police, Traffic, Arun Kumar Sinha.

As many as 1,55,678 motorcyclists were booked for not wearing helmets, 5,200 for overtaking through the wrong side, 5,523 for negligence, 11,439 for overloading and 7,541 for not dipping headlight. The police have also started crackdown on those indulging in illegal parking. During April, 22,959 were booked for violating parking norms. The police also held 1,604 for not removing sun films from the windowpanes and 779 for jumping yellow line. Use of mobile phone while driving landed 1,771 in the police net, and 6,617 for not having valid licence.

In April, 362 persons were killed in the 3,185 road accidents that took place in the State. The number of persons injured was 3,759. Mr. Sinha said the police will take stern steps, including legal steps, to curb road accidents and to ensure free flow of traffic.
