Eleventh-hour rush to file nominations

Much delay in announcement of nominees

October 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:19 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The District Collectorate on Wednesday turned into a sea of humanity with candidates and their supporters thronging its premises to file nomination papers for the civic body polls on the last day. The delay in announcing candidates, especially by the United Democratic Front, saw those in the fray scrambling to get hold of papers to file before the deadline at 3 p.m. Majority of the candidates who filed their nominations on Wednesday were of the UDF.

Sources in the Collectorate said even till the last minute candidates were rushing to file nomination papers. “We came to know that some candidates were finalised only around 2 p.m. Those who came till 3 p.m. were given tokens and their nominations accepted. Nominations of those who came after the deadline were not accepted,” said the source.

Traffic regulation

Such was the crowd surge that the police had to rush in additional forces to regulate traffic at Kudappanakunnu.

A release from the State Election Commission said the scrutiny of nomination papers would be held on Thursday. The candidate, election agents, one nominee of the candidate, and one person authorised by the candidate can be present during the scrutiny.

Candidates would be allowed to peruse their nomination forms during the scrutiny, the release said.
