: Laxity on the part of the government in strengthening the mechanism for regular monitoring and periodical inspection of power connections is taking a heavy toll on human and animal lives across the State.

As per official statistics, electrical accidents have claimed 309 lives and caused 56 animal deaths in the past one year.

The government has reportedly done precious little to prevent loss of life.

Power Department sources told The Hindu that safety and standard norms for electrical installations are observed more in the breach and the government decision to do away with periodic inspection of low tension power connections and other factors have reportedly created an alarming situation in which such accidents claim almost one life a day.
