Drinking in hotel rooms not illegal, says Excise Minister

Excise Minister K. Babu has said that drinking legally purchased liquor in hotel rooms booked in the consumer’s name cannot be deemed as unlawful.

Clarifying that he was not on the side of consumers when it came to the matter of imbibing alcohol, Mr. Babu told presspersons here on Wednesday that those who drink in hotel rooms would have to keep the rent receipt with them in the event they were challenged by law enforcers. There was no law banning the consumption of liquor in the privacy of one’s own home, he said.

However, this did not entail that owners of private premises could ply their customers or guests with liquor without the requisite sanction of the authorities.
