January 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar has urged the doctors of medical colleges to desist from going ahead with their strike plan.

In a statement here on Sunday, Mr. Sivakumar said the government had originally planned to transfer 143 doctors to the new medical colleges as recommended by the Director of Medical Education (DME), but had decided against it following protests from the doctors. It had actually ordered the transfer of only 36 doctors. The government had already created 255 new posts at the Manjeri medical college and 48 at the Idukki medical college. Steps had also been taken to create 832 posts at the Kochi Cooperative Medical College. As many as 350 of these had been filled, he said.
