The government will implement Dhanush, a programme to train 200 undergraduate students from each district for three years to provide them opportunities for higher education in top universities, Minister for Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a Model Career Centre and modernised University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau at the Students Centre here on Wednesday.

Mr. Ramakrishnan said currently only a few students from the State gained admission in top universities. The government wanted to change this. Dhanush would be implemented in Kozhikode initially.

The services of career centres would be expanded with the support of local self-government institutions.

The aptitude of students in rural areas would be gauged using psychometric tests and they would be trained based on that. The first phase of this programme would be launched in Manamboor grama panchayat under the Thiruvananthapuram career centre, he said.

The Minister said the unemployment rate among those who had access to university education was a matter of grave concern. Lack of job skills and unfamiliarity with new sectors were the biggest challenges. Students and the youth in the State would be able to overcome this.

The government, he said, was implementing a number of programmes to generate labour in tune with the rapid changes in the field of language and science and technology.

The model career centre has been built at ₹73 lakh, of which the Union government’s share is ₹23 lakh and the rest is that of the State.
