Demolition drive on

May 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:56 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

The district administration on Wednesday continued its demolition drive of unauthorised structures which are blocking the drains, as part of flood prevention activities in Thampanoor.

On the fifth day, the action was centred on the Masjid Road, on the way from Thampanoor to Chengalchoola. A set of slabs which were blocking the drains were removed.

“The slabs were used for an easier access to a flat in the area and they were blocking the drains during rain and causing floods. We removed the slabs. Another private party had used slabs to cut an easier way to their property. These were also removed,” said an official.

The district administration started its drive in Pazhavangady on Saturday, by demolishing several structures, including extensions of commercial buildings.

With notices being issued on May 1 and the Disaster Management Act being in force, no one has till now put up any resistance to the evictions.

Work on digging up space for drains in the cleared up areas has begun. Side walls will be constructed and they will be connected to the main drains.

The short-term work on flood prevention, of building drains in the cleared up areas, is expected to be completed by May 31, before the onset of monsoon.
