CPI(M) flays recast of block panchayats

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has accused the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which controls the local government institutions, of having gone in for reconstitution of block panchayats to suit its political interests.

Mr. Balakrishnan told a news conference here on Friday that the reconstitution had been done in an unscientific manner, without any reference to geographical or demographic norms.

The only objective of the government and the IUML appeared to be to win the upcoming local government elections. For instance, 12 block panchayats had been formed clubbing together three grama panchayats in one place and four panchayats in another place. There were also instances of 14 block panchayats having been formed clubbing together four panchayats and five block panchayats bringing together 10 panchayats. There was even a glaring instance of 36 block panchayats having been formed putting together six panchayats.

The CPI(M) leader said that in certain instances, the people had to travel 50 to 60 kilometres to reach the block panchayat headquarters.
