CPI: Vizhinjam being gifted to Adani group

May 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit secretary Kanam Rajendran has come down heavily on the Oommen Chandy government’s move to award the contract for construction and operation of the Vizhinjam international container transhipment terminal to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Ltd.

Mr. Rajendran told a Meet-the-Press programme at the Press Club here on Wednesday that the Vizhinjam project was virtually being gifted to the Adani group. While there was no dispute over the need for the Vizhinjam seaport, the government move to gift it to one particular group without learning any lesson from the experience with the Vallarpadam container transhipment terminal, operated by DP World, raised serious concerns.

Replying to questions, Mr. Rajendran said the LDF would take the help anyone, including KC(B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai in its campaign against the Oommen Chandy government’s corruption. Partnership in such campaigns did not mean that the KC(B) had been taken into the LDF. The LDF, he said, was yet to hold any formal discussion on expansion of the Opposition alliance.
