CPI seeks Mani’s arrest

Says his name figures on the VACB’s final charge sheet

May 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Finance Minister K.M. Mani figures on the final charge sheet prepared by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) in the bar bribery case and he should be arrested immediately, Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit secretary Kanam Rajendran has said.

He was briefing reporters about the deliberations of the two-day party State council here on Thursday.

Mr. Rajendran said even after getting clinching evidence of Excise Minister K. Babu accepting bribe, the government had not registered a case against him. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V.M. Sudheeran, and Congress leader A.K. Antony should explain their stance on such issues, he said. The Aruvikkara Assembly byelection would be a turning point in the State’s politics as it would be a verdict against the corruption charges levelled against the government, he said.

On the possibility of expanding the Left Democratic Front (LDF), Mr. Rajendran said the front was equipped to face any electoral test, but there was no harm in enhancing its strength. The LDF would take a collective decision on the issue. He termed baseless the United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders’ claims of the party holding talks with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). This was nothing but a figment of imagination, he said.
