Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission V.S.Achuthanandan on Monday inaugurated the ‘Go Green Expo’ organised by the city Corporation. The expo is aimed at popularising among traders and city residents alternatives to plastic carrybags including paper amd cloth bags, ahead of the complete ban on plastic carrybags in the city from March 1.
The exhibition will be on at the Sree Chithira Thirunal Park in East Fort till March 7, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Inaugurating the expo, Mr.Achuthanandan lauded the Corporation authorities for coming forward with an alternative to plastic carrybags, which are causing immense environmental destruction.
“When capitalism put forward globalisation as the only alternative, it was the left movement worldwide which showed them the alternative paths. Here, the Corporation is following the same steps in providing an alternative to plastic. It is not just the responsibility of the Corporation to make this success. The public and traders have to co-operate and ensure that this becomes a success,” he said.
The expo has stalls of various units producing paper bags, cloth bags, fancy items made using these materials and other related items for sale. Facilities have been arranged for traders to place bulk orders for such bags. At the entrance to the expo is the ‘Museum of Habitual Errors’, an art installation using discarded plastic bottles, made by the Recycle Bin Architectural Studio.
“The plan was to make the installation using 70,000 discarded plastic bottles. But, we could collect only 4,000 bottles in the collection drives till now. So, we are now collecting bottles daily from theatres and other places, to make the planned installation,” said one of the corporation officials involved in waste management.
