The city Corporation on Friday sent a consignment of 20,000 litres of drinking water to the flood-affected regions in Pathanamthitta district. Mayor V.K. Prashant said that there had been a massive response from the public to the call for food and other essential materials.

Though the Corporation’s 16 collection counters were scheduled to be opened only on Sunday, individuals and various organisations started bringing in material to the round-the-clock control room functioning at the local body’s main office. On Friday, a team of Corporation employees and volunteers began the work of separating and packing the clothes, medicines and other materials to be transported to various places.

Mayor’s call

The Mayor has requested the public to bring in drinking water, rice, green gram, biscuit, bedsheet, towel, sanitary napkins, undergarments, nighties and lungi. Those who are bringing in food items should take care to bring items that will not get spoilt fast.

The Corporation is also running 28 relief camps, for which also materials have been collected and distributed. In response to the Corporation’s appeal to individuals and organisations who have enough space and are willing to provide it for relief camps, quite a few came forward offering their houses and flats on Friday. These spaces will be made use of when the State government conveys its requirements, for those rescued from other districts.

Around 50 trucks of the Corporation and the Construction and Manufacturers’ Association as well as 40 boats from Vizhinjam, Poonthura, and Thumba regions have been mobilised for relief work. Corporation workers and sanitation workers have been deployed in 28 areas in the city.
