It is now the city Corporation’s turn to spread the message of renewable energy to the residents. In a bid to save on hefty power bills, the civic body has installed solar panels atop the Corporation building at Palayam. Mayor K. Chandrika inaugurated the solar power plant here on Tuesday.

The rooftop grid interactive solar power system was installed with the technical support of Keltron. There are two sets of panels spread across 1,400 sq m for the information technology (IT) block and the main building. The IT block has a 100 kW power solar power system and the main building a 40 kW power system. The Corporation requires around 100 kilowatts of power from the 140 kilowatts produced daily. It has been decided to give the surplus power to KSEB. The entire solar power system costs Rs.1.51 crore with the IT block system amounting to Rs.1.07 crore and the main building amounting to Rs.44 lakh.
