Song, dance and a riot of colours await tiny tots as they enter school life on Monday.

At many schools in the capital city, teachers, staff and parents besides the ‘seniors’ from last year were all busy on Sunday preparing a colourful welcome to the newcomers. The ‘Pravesanolsavam’, organised under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, is mainly meant to ensure that the children develop an affinity towards the system of formal schooling. This year, most of the schools have chosen to bring in a touch of nature from the very first day to let the children know the importance of nature in their lives.

Kummatti performance

At the Manacaud Lower Primary School, the welcome event would be marked by rendering of a poem by poet Kavalam Narayana Panicker and a ‘Kummatti’ performance. On Sunday, teachers and staff members were engaged in making caps and props with mango leaves, lotus petals and papers. “Our effort is to give the little ones a pleasant surprise with music and dance so that their fear of the new world into which they enter is wiped off,” said filmmaker Lenin Rajendran, who leads the preparations for the welcome party at the school.

The newcomers would be welcomed with chocolates and little gifts as they are taken to their classes. “We have invited TV anchor G.S. Pradeep as our chief guest on Monday,” said school principal Suma G.C.

At the Attakkulangara Government Central High School too, preparations are complete to welcome the new batch of students with a programme titled ‘Veendum Vasantham Ethunnu’. Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar and poet and environmental activist Sugathakumari would be on hand to inaugurate the programme and welcome the newcomers.
