CM misleading people on Vizhinjam project: Viswan

June 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener Vaikom Viswan has accused Chief Minister Oommen Chandy of misleading the people on the Vizhinjam seaport project.

In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Viswan said the LDF was committed to the implementation of the Vizhinjam project. The last LDF government had taken steps to achieve this goal. However, the attempt of the UDF at the time was to erect roadblocks to realisation of the long-cherished project. The LDF stand was that the project should remain in the public domain and not be handed over to private corporate sector.

The LDF stand was that the project should be implemented on ‘landlord’ model and its operations organised on PPP mode. With the UDF government opting for PPP mode for construction as well, the port which would have remained in the public sector would now go to the private sector, he said.

The LDF convener said the constituents of the Opposition alliance would participate in the all-party meeting convened by the government. The Chief Minister should, however, clarify why such a meeting was not convened before the government went ahead with the tendering process and held talks with the Adani group.Strong action

In a statement on the same issue, Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar said the government would deal strongly with any attempt to scuttle the Vizhinjam project, which was nearing fruition almost a quarter century after it was first conceived.
