January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Subhayatra, a multi-faceted programme of the Kerala Police involving all sections of society to make roads safer and to tackle traffic, will be launched on Wednesday.

Strict digital enforcement of rules, virtual and educational executing mechanisms, and campaigns for effective traffic management comprise the programme chalked out by the Traffic and Road Safety wing of the State police.

Digital measures

Digital means will be adopted to check speeding and rash and negligent driving as these were found to be the main reasons for the increasing number of road accidents, Manoj Abraham, Inspector General of Police, Traffic and Road Safety, said.

More speed check cameras on all major roads under the public-private participation mode, hand-held speed radars and alcometers in all police stations, payment of fines through banks across the State by associating with State Bank of India, enforcement of helmet rule, and making headgear mandatory for pillion rider are the areas identified for enforcement of rules.

A portal exclusively for traffic, traffic e-mail, all-Kerala traffic helpline number, and WhatsApp for forwarding traffic complaints, pictures and videos form part of the virtual methods to be adopted.

Traffic parks

There will be traffic parks in all districts, mobile electronic park, traffic clubs in schools to create awareness among children, and a traffic training institute to impart training in traffic rules and regulations to the public, policemen, and traffic wardens.

Safety focus

Formation of SOFT (Save Our Fellow Traveller) has been mooted to ensure that road accident victims get immediate help and are taken to hospitals.

Actor Mohanlal has been roped in as the Goodwill Ambassador for the campaign. Traffic instruction stickers on vehicles, organ donation campaign, and rehabilitation of traffic accident victims will be taken up under Subhayatra.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the programme at the State-level and launch two mobile exhibition vehicles at Christ Nagar School in the capital city. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will unveil the logo.
