Veteran actors Madhu and Sheela walked down memory lane when they recollected events associated with the making of Chemmeen at a function organised to mark its golden jubilee year here on Monday. The occasion also commemorated the death anniversary of Sathyan, one of the film’s lead actors.

“Being a newcomer to Malayalam cinema then, I considered Sathyan my teacher from whom I could learn immensely. Memories of the film and its shooting continue to remain fresh in my mind. It was a turning point in my career. I consider myself privileged to have been part of the film, which is considered a milestone in Malayalam cinema,” Mr. Madhu said.

Mr. Madhu said Sathyan had assumed several positions in his life including that of a teacher, police inspector, soldier, government official, and actor. “There are not many among us who have lived several lives as him,” he said.

He expressed dismay at the absence of Sathyan’s family members at the function.

Ms. Sheela spoke of how Sathyan had influenced her in her career. “Sathyan sir had several qualities that were absent in many. He remained brave and determined throughout his life, especially during his last days before succumbing to cancer. He was known for his discipline and dedication to the profession,” she said.

She urged the State government to institute awards in memory of actors Prem Nazir and Miss Kumari to honour their contribution to Malayalam cinema.

Assembly Speaker N. Sakthan, who inaugurated the function, said Chemmeen had been a driving force for the Malayalam film industry.

Minister for Culture K.C. Joseph said the film was a matter of pride for the State.

K. Muraleedharan, MLA, delivered the keynote address. Actors Kuttyedathi Vilasini, Latha Raju, and Kerala Cultural Forum president A.P. Jalaja Kumar and general secretary Breeze M.S. Raj spoke.

The function was organised by the forum at Sathyan Memorial here.
