The SEWA Union, the Tamil Nadu Human Rights Movement and Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers’ Union have demanded an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) into the mysterious death of Amuda, a domestic help from Tamil Nadu, at Kothamangalam recently.

The three organisations staged a Secretariat March here on Wednesday to press for the CBI investigation and documentation of information about migrant domestic workers and their employers and grant of legal recognition to migrant labourers.

Inaugurating the march, CPI(M) legislator S. Rajendran called upon the government to take steps to protect the rights of the thousands of young boys and girls who arrive in the State to work as domestic help. He offered all support for the efforts to bring to light the truth about Amuda’s mysterious death.

Tamil Nadu Human Rights Movement coordinators Jose and Lucia, Kerala Stree Vedi leader Mercy Alexander, SEWA Union secretary Sonia George and Seta Dasan, among others, spoke.

A meeting held after the march decided to hold a dharna before the Kothamangalam police station and submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to expedite the investigation into Amuda’s death.
