Chalai, the busiest market in Thiruvananthapuram, wears a deserted look following the dawn-to-dusk hartal.

The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Congress and Left parties on Monday has paralysed life in the state capital.

Shops and business establishments are closed and educational institutions are not functioning. Attendance is thin in the Secretariat and other government offices.

The state owned KSRTC and the private stage carriers are not plying. Private vehicles are running.

Flights to and from Thiruvananthapuram international airport are operating as per schedule. Hundreds who arrived in trains at the central station got stranded as taxies and autos are off the road in response to strike call. The city police are plying their buses from Thampanoor to the medical college campus for the sick who have come for medical needs.

The police removed 12 Congress workers who tried to block the Technopark gate as staffers came in vehicles for work. No untoward incident has been reported after the hartal began. The city police have stepped up security.
