An eight-month-old baby girl was found dead, allegedly after being accidentally smothered by her mother, at Keezhattingal near Kadakkavoor here on Friday.

According to the police, the baby, daughter of Chandraprabha, 28, was taken to the Chirayinkeezhu Government Hospital around 7.30 a.m. by the police after they received a distress call from the mother herself, saying that the baby was not moving. The child was declared brought dead at the hospital.

The police said the father of Chandraprabha revealed that she was under medication for mental illness and that she was taking heavy sedatives.

She could have accidentally slept on the baby, the police said. Chandraprabha has since been admitted to the hospital.

The police said she was estranged from her live-in partner, Sanal, with whom she was staying after her divorce a few years back.
