The city police is probing various leads in the ATM robbery case in Ambalathinkara, near Karyavattom, including the possibility of an inter-State racket to be behind the incident in which over cash worth over ₹10 lakh was looted.

While they were yet to arrive at a conclusion, the sleuths have found certain similarities between the burglary and one that was reported at Chengannur in which nearly ₹4 lakh was stolen from an ATM a month ago.

Gas cutters are believed to have been used to break open the cash box that was kept inside the dispensing machine. An amount of ₹10.18 lakh is believed to have been stolen from the ATM machine of the State Bank of India (SBI) at Ambalathinkara, the police said. According to an official, footage that was captured by some CCTV cameras in the area were currently being examined in a bid to identify the persons behind the theft. The probe is likely to be extended to other States on the basis of certain information they have obtained. The secluded area where the ATM is located and the lack of security cover for the facility also facilitated the theft, the police said.
