Aruvikkara set for by-poll

Voters of the Aruvikkara Assembly constituency who do not have Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC), can produce any of the 12 documents identified by the Election Commission of India as proof of identity for casting votes in the by-election to be held on Saturday.

The documents are: passport; driving licence; identity cards issued by the State or Central governments and public sector undertakings to its employees; passbooks with photograph issued by banks or post office; PAN card; Aadhaar; smart card of National Population Register; MGNREGA job card; health insurance smart card issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labour; pension document with photograph; authenticated photo voter slip issued by the election authorities; or official identity cards issued to Members of Parliament and Members of the Legislative Assembly, District Collector A. Kowsigan said in a release.

From 7 a.m.

Polling would be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. At all polling booths, staff trained to assist the voters had been deployed.

Agents of candidates should reach the booths at least 30 minutes before polling begins.

Photos of candidates

Electronic voting machines would have photographs of the candidates for the first time.

Immediately after the polling concludes, the machines would be taken first to the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Nedumangad, and from there to the counting centre at the Swathi Thirunal Music College in the city.

Holiday

The district administration has declared holiday for the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Nedumangad, and the Government Boys’ Upper Primary School on June 26 and 27. Holiday has been declared for schools having polling booths, he said.

The district labour officer has declared paid holiday for voters who are working in private establishments.

Campaigning ends

Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto said in a release that public campaigning was banned during the period of 48 hours ending the close of poll in elections. The district administration and the police should ensure that the instructions of the Election Commission were complied to scrupulously, she said.
