Anganwadis in urban areas in the State are set for a revamp.
The government is mulling a Plan proposal to integrate 100 anganwadis in municipalities and corporation areas and change their working time this financial year.
The integration has been mooted as anganwadis in urban areas are located close to each other.
Not only do they cover a lesser area, but their beneficiaries also live nearby, officials said.
The proposal is to integrate the anganwadis and keep them open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The workers and helpers of the anganwadis will be deployed in the integrated anganwadi on shift basis.
Officials said there was even an instance of two anganwadis functioning in the same building in the city. The integration would merge anganwadis located nearby in a single centre, provided it had facilities for accommodating the combined strength of the children.
The anganwadis will also double as a creche for children till the age of three. Creches functioning under the National Creche Scheme and located near anganwadis with enough space will be integrated with them, sources said.
More facilities will have to be arranged so that the anganwadis can function as creches.
The anganwadis would function as a pre-school for children in the 3-6 age group.
They would also become spaces where adolescent girls could stay out in the after-school hours without fear for their safety.
₹2 crore sanctioned
An amount of ₹2 crore has been earmarked in the budget for the revamp of the anganwadis.
Preliminary work has begun, officials said.
