AMMA humiliated State’s people: Brinda

Says blatant anti-woman stand doesn’t suit Kerala society

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat has said that the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) has humiliated Kerala and its people by reinducting actor Dileep into the film body.

Inaugurating a national seminar on the World of EMS at Wandoor on Friday, Ms. Karat criticised the film body for being a platform of male chauvinists. “The film body should not turn into a collective of male chauvinists. It should step back from such activities, and correct its anti-woman stand,” she said.

State’s image

Saying that the stand of the AMMA had tarnished the progressive image of Kerala, Ms. Karat called upon the organisation’s functionaries to reverse its decision to reinstate Mr. Dileep, who is an accused in a case of abducting and molesting an actor.

The CPI(M) leader wondered how the film body could take such an anti-woman stand. She called upon the AMMA functionaries to ensure justice to the survivor.

“The film body should stand with the survivor,” she said.

Ms. Karat called for a joint move against the anti-woman stance of the AMMA.

She said that blatant anti-woman stand and incidents like lynching would not suit Kerala’s progressive society, which is known to uphold democratic values.

“Democracy means not only votes. It means fair stand as well,” she said.

Justice to women meant not only providing them with legal assistance, but also supporting them in such issues, she added. “Everyone who thinks progressively should join hands against this injustice,” she said.
