The 10-day Alpasi festival at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple concluded with the traditional arattu ceremony on Monday.

The arattu procession that started from the temple concluded at the Shanghumughom beach after passing through the runway of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The runway was closed on the basis of a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued worldwide and flights rescheduled for the procession to pass through.

Caparisoned elephants, mounted police, and the police band accompanied the ‘Garuda Vahanas’ carrying the idols of Sree Padmanabhaswamy, Narasimha Murthy and Thiruvambady Krishna. People lined the West Fort-Shanghumughom road to witness the event.

The head of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore, Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma, led the procession wielding the ceremonial sword. The idols of five other temples in the city and its suburbs, which has connection with the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, also accompanied the arattu procession.

At the Shanghumughom beach, the idols were bathed in the sea before being taken back to the temple where the ceremonial festival flag was lowered, marking the conclusion of the Alpasi festival.
