Agasthyarkoodam trek from today

The 47-day trekking season to Agasthyarkoodam is all set to commence on Monday. As many as 4,700 people, including 100 women, have registered for the trek that will continue until March 1.

It is for the first time that women trekkers are permitted entry to Agasthyarkoodam on the basis of a Kerala High Court order.

K. Dhanya Sanal, Spokesperson of the Defence Ministry in Thiruvananthapuram, is expected to become the first woman trekker to scale the 1,868-metre peak located within the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, following the lifting of the ban.

From Bonacaud

The trekkers have been advised by the Forest Department to arrive at the pick-up station near the Bonacaud estate by 7 a.m., following which their registration passes and identity cards will be examined, before the trek. They will then be divided into five groups of 20 members each. The first group will commence their trek by 8.30 a.m.

None will be allowed to start trek after 12 p.m. Each group will be allotted a guide by the Eco-Development Committee.

The department has made arrangements for adequate facilities, including canteens, at Bonacaud and Athirumala base stations. Women guards will also be deployed to ensure the safety of women trekkers. Accident insurance has also been launched for the trekkers.
