The life of Parassala B. Ponnammal, doyenne of Carnatic music, is one dedicated entirely to music and mentoring of generations of singers, playback singer K.S. Chithra has said.

Releasing Ee Jeevithathinu Peru Sangeetham, a 25-minute documentary on the celebrated singer, made by Priya Raveendran, at Bharat Bhavan here on Tuesday, Ms. Chithra described Ms. Ponnammal as one on whom celebrity status sat lightly. She was never too worried about awards and accolades. “Amma,” she added, “was born to sing,” and recalled that her own mother was the doyenne singer’s student for a brief period.

Chairing the function, music scholar Achuthshankar S. Nair said Ms. Ponnamal should have been as famous as M.S. Subbalakshmi. Such fame, he said, was denied to her by certain circumstances.

Singer and music scholar B. Arundhathi received the first copy of the documentary from Chithra at the function attended by several of the 94-year-old singer’s disciples.

The documentary was screened later.
