Writer Kamal C. Chavara was arrested by the city police on Tuesday for allegedly behaving rudely with City Police Commissioner G. Sparjan Kumar.

The Cantonment Police said two students of University College and their parents had reached the office of the Commissioner in connection with their alleged manhandling by some students of the college recently.

During the meeting, Kamal Chavara who had come on behalf of the girls talked to the Commissioner rudely and created a ruckus. He was reportedly in an inebriated state. Assistant Commissioner, Cantonment, K.E. Baiju, who was present at the meeting, was injured when he tried to intervene, Cantonment SI Shaji B.M. said. The Commissioner’s gunman was also attacked, a release from the Commissioner’s office said. Reinforcements arrived and Kamal was taken to the Cantonment police station.

A case had been registered against him under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), Mr. Shaji said.
