A school student, who is a leader of the CPI(M) feeder organisation Balasangam, was assaulted in Parassala on Saturday. The incident could be in retaliation to the attack on a Yuva Morcha activist a day ago, the police said.
Ujjwal Chakravarthi, a Class XI student of the Government Higher Secondary School in Dhanuvachapuram, was manhandled by a few youths, purportedly activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The Parassala police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
The incident occurred close on the heels of an attack on 19-year-old Sarath, a Yuva Morcha activist, allegedly by members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in Dhanuvachapuram on Friday.
Hartal peaceful
Meanwhile, the dawn-to-dusk hartal that was called by the BJP in four grama panchayats of Kallambalam, near Varkala, passed off peacefully. The hartal was in protest against the clash during which ABVP activists was allegedly attacked by DYFI workers over a dispute relating to the use of a flagpole in Njekkad.
The BJP had planned a demonstration on Saturday, but it was called off. The Kallambalam police had registered a case against 70 CPI(M) and 20 BJP activists. The police have tightened surveillance in the area.
