July 16, 2010 08:27 pm | Updated 08:27 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Income Tax (IT) Commissioner for Thiruvananthapuram S. Ravi has urged individual tax payers to take maximum benefit of the e-filing system the department is offering to them for filing their income tax returns.

At a press conference here on Friday, he said the facility offered on the department's link www.incometaxindiaefiling.go.in would enable faster refunds. There was also the convenience of doing the filing without coming to the Income Tax office and standing in the queue.

The last day prescribed for filing of individual income tax returns for the year 2009-10 is July 31. He said special counters would be open at the office of the department in the city at Kowdiar from July 28 to 31 during working hours to deal with the usual last minute rush in filing returns. He requested tax payers to file the returns as early as possible to avoid the final rush.

He said his office had made special arrangements to bulk collect returns from the employees of major institutions such as Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the Indian Railways. Any institution from where more than a hundred returns could be collected could seek this facility from the department.

Points to be noted while filing the returns included entering the PAN correctly, filling up various columns in the form correctly and ensuring that the deductions claimed are exact. Claims relating to reliefs under Sections 89, 90 and 91, if applicable, should be correctly indicated.

For queries, the following officers could be contacted: K.V. Ananthanarayanan (098446508855), Ben Mathew Varkery (09447475655), K.J. Joseph (09447124332), Abdul Hakeem (09446292629), Bhaskaran Nair (09447412416) and R. Dolly (09746597060).

Mr. Ravi said the Thiruvananthapuram circle of the department had 1.42 lakh individual income tax assesses.
