Mosque to avoid use of plastics

June 16, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:14 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Palayam Juma Masjid Mahallu Committee has resolved to refrain from using plastic covers to distribute fruits during the ‘nombu thura’ (breaking of fast) at the Palayam Juma Masjid. The decision was taken following a plea made by former MLA T.N. Prathapan during a discourse on the mosque premises on Tuesday.

Mr. Prathapan said the use of disposable glasses and plates during such occasions paved the way for environmental problems and led to increased expense. Soon after his speech, Palayam Juma Masjid Mahallu Committee secretary M. Salim announced that plastic plates would be replaced by steel plates. The programme also marked the first occasion when a non-Muslim participated at a discourse at the mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.

Religious scholars will participate in the series of discourses that will continue until July 4.
