Minister for Education C. Ravindranath during the talk he convened to discuss the law academy issue with the college management and the students at the Minister’s Chamber in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday.

The Law Academy Law College management has said classes will resume at the college on Monday.

The Students Federation of India also declared that it had urged students to return to the classrooms. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit president Kummanam Rajasekharan called on Governor P. Sathasivam, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Kerala, and sought cancellation of affiliation of the college.

Mr. Rajasekharan, in his complaint, alleged that the college was functioning in violation of civil and criminal laws, and against students’ interests, and urged the Governor to direct the Syndicate to recommend the government to cancel its affiliation.

BJP Dakshin Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was part of the delegation that called on the Governor.

Later, Mr. Rajasekharan alleged that Minister for Education C. Ravindranath had insulted the students after calling them for talks. The Minister was arguing on behalf of the management and trying to get the students to accept its position, the BJP State unit president said, adding that the government had proved that it was a puppet in the hands of college Principal P. Lekshmi Nair.

Party State unit secretary V.V. Rajesh, meanwhile, alleged that the government was not action on allegation against Dr. Nair because she was blackmailing Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders. Instead of arresting her on the basis of various allegations and evidence, the police were trying to protect her, he alleged.

Chennithala alleges

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the Education Minister’s walkout from talks convened by him was an insult to the agitating students.

Mr. Chennithala alleged that the incident was unfortunate. Never before had a Minister walked out of a meeting convened by him or her to broker peace. The Education Minister, instead of resolving the problem, had worsened matter, he alleged.

Calling for Dr. Nair’s resignation, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary Lathika Suresh alleged that she had mistreated Dalit students and made casteist remarks against them.

The All India Youth Federation, in a statement, urged the government to take serious note of the allegation that land given to the Law Academy trust for educational purposes had been used for commercial ends.

Criticising the government stand on the issue, the All India Forward Bloc alleged that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s response on the alleged misuse of land was a mockery of civil society. The Chief Minister had even spoken against the Revenue Minister. Insulting a stir by the opposition parties did not behove him, a statement from the party here said.
