Facilities for the aged to be expanded

July 21, 2010 09:02 pm | Updated 09:02 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

The State government proposes to implement in all sincerity the measures envisaged under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act of 2007, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim told the Assembly on Wednesday.

He was replying, on behalf of the Minister for Social Welfare, to a calling attention motion moved by C.P. Mohammed, who said the demographic structure of the State was changing fast and the proportion of the aged in the population was increasing. The joint family system that used to afford security to the aged in the past too had collapsed. An increasing number of aged people now faced the trauma of neglect and ill-treatment.

Mr. Karim said the government was aware of the issue and had already initiated steps to expand facilities such as old age homes, day-care homes for the aged and geriatric wards in hospitals, besides increasing assistance to institutions taking care of aged people.
