Bhopal verdict an eye-opener: Achuthanandan

Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday that the court verdict in the Bhopal gas leak case would be an eye opener for people favouring the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill.

Addressing the media at his weekly Cabinet briefing, the Chief Minister said that that the verdict was grossly inadequate, and the government and the courts should be held responsible for that. It showed their approach towards monopoly capitalists.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that the verdict had come 26 years after the Bhopal tragedy, and was a disgrace for the judiciary. The chairman of the Union Carbide went scot-free and the Indians, who were in charge of the plant, escaped with minor punishments. There was opinion the world over against the verdict.

He added that the verdict showed how worse the situation would be in the case of a nuclear accident if the Nuclear Liability Bill became the law.
