54.72 % of population in Kerala are Hindus

Hindus constitute 54.72 per cent of the total population in Kerala, with Muslims accounting for 26.56 per cent and Christians 18.38 per cent, according to the population census by religious community 2011 released on Tuesday.

Of the total population of 3,34,06,061 in Kerala, the number of Hindus is 1,82,82,492, while the Muslim population is pegged at 88,73,472 and Christians 61,41,269. Hindus outnumber all the other communities taken together in the state by 31,66,541. As many as 88,155 persons have been categorised as “religion not stated’.

The rural population outnumbers the urban population in all the major communities except Muslims.

While the rural Hindu population is 94,08,848, the number of Hindus in rural areas is 88,73,644. Rural Christians number 37,55,664 while the number of urban Christians is 23,85,605.

In contrast, the number of Muslims in rural areas is only 42,51,787, against an urban population of 46,21,685, the census figures reveal.

Among the minor communities in Kerala, Buddhists numbered 4,752, Jains 4,489 and Sikhs 3,814.

The census data is available on the website of the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
