52 year old sentenced to RI for life for murdering wife

The Thiruvananthapuram Additional Sessions Court – VI has sentenced a 52-year old man, who was found guilty of murdering his wife, to rigorous imprisonment for life.

Delivering the verdict, Additional Sessions Court – VI judge N.V. Raju sentenced Podiyan of Kadakkal after being guilty of hacking his wife, Sumati, 50, of Vamanapuram to death six years ago. He has also been imposed a fine of Rs. 15,000, the default of which lead to an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution that was led by Additional Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor M. Salahudeen, the incident had taken place on August 11, 2011, after Sumati had decided to reside with her daughter in Vamanapuram, tired of being ill-treated by her husband, a chronic alcoholic.

Incensed over her refusal to return to reside with him, he murdered her when she had been washing her laundry at a canal. As many as 19 witnesses had testified at the trial court. The case had been investigated by the then Circle Inspector of Venjaramoodu, R. Sreekumar. (EOM/SBG)
