97 to contest district panchayat election

A total of 175 candidates pulled out of the fray on Saturday, the last day of withdrawing nominations for the city Corporation election. A total of 1,018 papers were received for 100 wards in the Corporation of which 678 were found to be valid after scrutiny. Now, after the last day for withdrawal of nominations, 503 candidates are in the fray. Of them, 254 are women.

Of the 220 nominations received for 26 wards in the district panchayat, 124 are found to be valid.

After the last day for withdrawing nominations, only 97 are facing the poll battle, with the remaining opting out.

Of the 97 contestants for the district panchayat elections, 43 are women.

Final figures were being collated to identify the total number of candidates for the grama panchayats, block panchayats, and municipalities when the report was filed around 11.10 p.m.

“We are still getting reports and tabulating them. The number of contestants will be known by early of Sunday,” said a source.
