25 heavy vehicle drivers booked

₹1.5 lakh collected as penalty

The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)’s Mobile Enforcement Squad booked 25 heavy vehicles for overloading and avoiding check-posts in a special drive held near Amaravila, near the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in the district, on Thursday night.

Acting on the directive of P.M. Shaji, South Zone Enforcement Regional Transport Officer, the squad levied a penalty of ₹1.5 lakh from the erring drivers.

Of the 25 drivers booked, 17 committed grave offences such as overloading.

The driving licences of six heavy vehicle drivers found indulging in overloading will be suspended as per the directive of the Supreme Court-appointed committee on road safety.

The drive was carried out by the MVD squad led by motor vehicle inspector Deepu.
