2 students go missing at Muthalapozhi

Fishermen rescue a third

Two school students went missing in the Muthalapozhi estuary, near Perumathura, on Thursday. Those missing, Harichand and Devanarayanan, both natives of Vakkom, were part of an eight-member group of Class 10 students of SSPB High School in Kadakkavoor that went to Perumathura for a leisure trip.

While three students who entered the rough waters found it difficult to swim, a group of fishermen managed to rescue one among them, Gokul of Vakkom. He was admitted to the Government Taluk Hospital, Chirayinkeezhu.

Later, the coastal police, Marine Enforcement, and the Coast Guard launched a joint rescue operation. The search efforts continued late into night, the Anchuthengu police said.

The estuary has witnessed numerous mishaps in recent times, prompting the local community to criticise the ‘unscientific’ construction of breakwater in the region. Two fishermen were killed after their boat capsized in the sea three months ago.
