The case of the death of one-year-and-three-month-old Sanvika has taken a turn with her mother, Rekha, admitting that she had planned to end her life along with her two children in Kubja river near their house at Yadamogge village in Kundapur taluk on July 11.

The body of Sanvika was found at Karoor about 2 km from Yadamogge village on July 12. Ms. Rekha had earlier said that a masked man had entered their house at Yadamogge and abducted Sanvika.

A press release issued by the district police here on Saturday said that during detailed enquiry, Ms. Rekha admitted that she wanted to end her life along with her children on July 11. She had taken five-year-old son, Satvik, and Sanvika to the river.

But Sanvika slipped from her hands in the river and got carried by the water currents in it [and died]. She and Satvik too got carried away to some distance. But they managed to reach the riverbank. To cover up the incident, she created a tale of abduction of Sanvika and lodged a complaint, Ms. Rekha admitted.

Based on her statement, the police have booked a case under Sections 302 and 307 of IPC and are continuing the investigation.

During the enquiry, Ms. Rekha was provided counselling by a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist had opined that Ms. Rekha was suffering from depression and required treatment. Accordingly, Ms. Rekha was admitted to the Dr. A.V. Baliga Memorial Hospital here as an inpatient on Saturday.

A comprehensive probe would be taken up after Ms. Rekha’s treatment was completed and she was discharged from the hospital, the release said.
