Mayor Kavita Sanil, councillors and staff of Manglauru City Corporation will give a push for segregation of dry and wet waste on the World Environment Day on June 5 by taking a pledge to follow it in their houses. The State government has issued a directive to all municipalities and other local bodies to focus on segregation of waste collected from households on June 5.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, Ms. Sanil said that the corporation has carried out campaigns for segregation of wet and dry waste.
A set of vehicles were deployed for collection of dry waste.
From June 5, a renewed focus will be made by the corporation to collect dry and wet waste from the houses. “We (councillors and officials) will lead by example by segregating waste at our houses and hand it over to the agency personnel collecting it,” she said.
Corporation Environment Officer Madhu S. Manohar said that the corporation was dropping the facility of collection of dry waste every week by a vehicle.
Instead, vehicles of Antony Waste Handling Cell Private Limited, the agency authorised to collect waste from households, deployed to collect wet waste are being modified to carry dry waste too.
“Provision is made to carry 60 per cent of wet waste and 40 per cent of dry waste in those vehicles,” Mr. Manohar said and added that this will end the hassle of stocking dry waste.
On June 5, the corporation will give training to 219 pourakarmikas, 42 daily wage workers and 623 outsourced cleaning staff on waste segregation and other related issues. The pourakarmikas will be provided health cards on the same day.
Tree planting
Ms. Sanil said that on June 5 they will also launch drive to plant saplings in different parts of the city. This was to compensate for the loss of about 140 trees that had to be cut for various development activities taken up in the last three years. The corporation intends to plant a minimum of 25 saplings in each one of the 60 wards this month. The programme will be symbolically started by planting saplings near the Town Hall at 9 a.m., she said.
