To prevent tourists from entering the sea at Malpe beach, the beach authority put up a long net here on Friday. The net has been drawn over a distance of one kilometre and it is about seven feet high. As many as 40 red flags have been put up all over the beach with the caution “Danger, No Entry” written on them, alerting tourists against entering the sea.
With the monsoon entering Udupi district, the sea is rough during this period. Though there is Life Guard facility available on the beach, it is dangerous to enter the sea during the monsoon. No tourist should cross the net installed on the beach. The net and the red flags will be removed either at the end of August or in the first week of September depending upon the condition of the sea then.
“Until we replace the red flags with yellow flags, tourists should not enter the sea. The yellow flags would be an indication that it is safe to enter the sea. We request tourists to follow the rules,” said Sudhesh Shetty, head of the agency in-charge of development and maintenance of the Malpe beach.
As rain accompanied by winds has started lashing the beach, the authority has removed the eight shelters or huts made of eco-friendly material put on the beach and stored them safely. These shelters would be set up again on the beach after the monsoon.
