Dakshina Kannada in-charge Minister U.T. Khader on Saturday said the government will pay an immediate compensation of ₹1 lakh to those who have lost houses in sea erosion.
He said the victims will also be paid ₹10,000 a month for renting a house till alternative accommodation is constructed.
The government will either allot allot a house site in rural areas or get a two-bed flat constructed in an apartment in urban areas for such victims, Mr. Khader told presspersons here.
Mr. Khader said there are about 150 houses between the Ullal and the Batpady coastline that face the threat of sea erosion, whose residents have to be relocated.
There are also about 40 houses on Ullal Beach, which has been proposed for development. The government will chalk out a plan for their rehabilitation, which should begin soon after monsoon.
He said the State government’s rehabilitation plan, envisaged during last year’s Kodagu calamity, should be a model to other States.
The problems will be discussed during Revenue Minister R.V. Deshpande’s visit to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada on June 18.
Mr. Deshpande will visit areas affected by natural calamities and hold meetings with district administrations about rehabilitation measures as well as urban property rights card. Dakshina Kannada administration has already submitted a report to the government on sea erosion impact, he said.
Mr. Khader said the government has decided to open a zonal office of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Mangaluru. He said Dakshina Kannada has many medical colleges affiliated to RGUHS. Students have to travel all the way to Bengaluru for their works; the government intended to alleviate their travel woes by setting up the zonal office, he said.
He said the zonal office will also have a sports complex. The district administration will identify suitable land, preferably close to Mangalore University campus at Konaje, the Minister added.
