Varsity council agrees to grant affiliation to 13 new colleges

Nine of them will be in Dakshina Kannada, two each in Udupi and Kodagu

The Academic Council of Mangalore University in its meeting on Tuesday agreed to grant affiliation to 13 new colleges from 2019-20. Of them, nine colleges are in Dakshina Kannada and two colleges each are in Udupi and Kodagu districts.

But it will not increase the total number of colleges under the university as 14 colleges have not applied for the renewal of affiliation for 2019-20.

Breaking away from the traditional combinations offered in the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Ambika College, a new one in Puttur, has proposed to offer two new combinations. They are Physics, Mathematics and Psychology and Physics, Mathematics and Philosophy.

In addition, the same college has proposed to offer four combinations in the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) to make Humanities attractive to students. They are English, Psychology and Journalism; English, Philosophy and Psychology; Sanskrit, Psychology and Philosophy; and Kannada, Psychology and Philosophy. Details of the colleges and the courses proposed by them are as follows:

Dakshina Kannada: Mangaluru Institute of Oncology, Pumpwell (Diploma in radio therapy technology); Mangala College of Speech and Hearing, Neerumarga, Mangaluru (Bachelor in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology); Indian Design School, Attavara, Mangaluru (B.Sc in Interior Design and Decoration); Anjuman First Grade College, Jokatte, Mangaluru (B.Com.); Nitte Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Studies, Kodakkal, Mangaluru (B.Sc in Hospitality Science and add on course in Aviation and Hospitality Science); Gloria College, Darbe, Puttur (B.Sc in Fashion Design); Markazul Huda College, Kumbra, Puttur (B.Com and B.A.); Tejaswini College of Yoga Sciences and Therapy, Kudupu, Mangaluru (Certificate course in Yogic Science); and Ambika College, Puttur (B.Sc.). Udupi: Varasiddi Vinayaka First Grade College, Kerady, Kundapura taluk, Udupi (B.Com.); Vidyalakshmi Group of Educational Institutions, Brahmavara, Udupi (B.Com., B.B.A., B.Sc in Hospitality Science and Aviation and Hospitality Science as an add-on course).

Kodagu: Chanayka College, Chowdlu, Somwarpet, Kodagu (B.Com and BSW) and S S Degree College, Kushalnagara, Kodagu (B.Com).

A.M. Khan, Registrar (Administration) told the meeting that the university had 210 colleges under its jurisdiction in the three districts. With 14 colleges not applying for renewal of affiliation for 2019-20, the university now has 209 colleges in the three districts. They include 138 private colleges, 37 government colleges, 11 permanently affiliated and five constituent and five autonomous colleges. The university had set up 36 local inspection committees (LICs) to inspect infrastructure facilities in each of these 209 colleges for renewal and extension of affiliation including granting new affiliation.
