With Mangalore University preparing itself to introduce choice-based credit system (CBCS) for undergraduate courses from the academic year 2019-20, it has now framed new guidelines for declaration of ranks.
CBCS will enable students to study inter-disciplinary subjects along with their core subjects. The university’s post-graduate programmes are already under CBCS. The guidelines have been revised as both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes would be under CBCS from the next academic year.
When CBCS is introduced, degree courses will be known as degree programmes while the “subject/paper” will be known as “course”. The importance of the courses and activities will be quantified in terms of credits wherein each credit will be equivalent to 50 marks. The total credits of the programme will range between 100-104 credits.
The results will be declared at the end of each semester in terms of marks and also in terms of “Semester Grade Point Average”. The total marks secured as well as “Cumulative Grade Point Average” will be notified at the end of the programme. The university will issue “marks cum grade card”.
According to the revised guidelines approved by the Academic Council last week, the number of ranks to be declared “shall be 1 % of the total number of candidates appearing for any final semester examination (fraction being rounded off to the nearest integer) subject to a minimum of 1 and maximum of 10 ranks.”
It said that only those candidates who obtained A grade and above would be eligible for ranks. Ranks for any programme should be declared based on the CGPA obtained in the examinations of the entire programme as per regulations. Candidates should be ranked in the descending order of the CGPA obtained in the examination concerned.
If more than one candidate obtained the same CGPA, then the candidate securing the highest marks among them should be ranked higher. In case if more than one candidate obtained the same CGPA and same marks, all of them should be eligible for the same ranking.
The guidelines said that the ranks should be awarded only to such candidates who pass their examinations in the first attempt without discontinuity.
Candidates who reject/improve their results are not eligible for ranking.
Ranks should not be declared for the courses conducted by the autonomous colleges or the programmes offered under the distance education mode of the university.
According to the guidelines the ranks, as earlier, should be declared only after the re-evaluation of results are declared. Rank certificate should be signed and issued by the Registrar (Evaluation) on payment of prescribed fee.
