Nisha James, Superintendent of Police, said on Friday that the district police will launch a special drive against motorcycles not using silencers, and also against those persons driving on the wrong side of the road in Udupi district.

Speaking to presspersons during the phone-in programme at the District Police Office, Ms. James said that this drive had become essential owing to increasing complaints.

Already, the police had taken action against the practice of driving on the wrong side near Syndicate Circle and Sharada Mantapa here.

But it was essential that the mindset of the people also changed in this regard, she said.

To a query, she said that the police had taken stern action against the illegal transportation of cattle in the district.

Check-posts

Already the police had put over 30 check-posts during nights, while there were over 10 functioning during the day across the district to prevent illegal transportation of cows.

Special teams had also been formed at the sub-divisional level, which kept a vigil on repeat offenders who had indulged in cattle theft.

But local authorities too needed to contribute in this regard as cattle thefts also targeted stray cattle.

The local authorities should send the stray cattle to the goshalas.

The district police had registered 14 cases against illegal transportation of cows from January to July 11, this year. They had rescued 57 cattle and arrested 31 persons during this period, she said.

To another query, Ms. James said that the district police had taken action against autorickshaws and vans carrying school children beyond the permissible limit. The police had urged the Regional Transport Office to suspend the driving licences of the erring drivers, she said.

The government had substantially increased the fines for overspeeding of vehicles and use of mobile phones while driving, Ms. James added.
