Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, said on Monday said that a Sand Monitoring Committee would be formed to check illegal sand extraction activities in Udupi district.
Chairing a meeting at the District Offices Complex here, Ms. Francis said that steps would be taken to provide sand to the people in the district.
Already the Public Works Department (PWD) had stored 114 truckloads of sand at Balkur in Kundapur taluk. This was available to all, including private parties, at the rate of ₹ 4,500 per truckload of sand, she said.
There was enough sand available for development activities under government schemes.

It was decided to use vehicles, staff, barricades, reflector jackets and night vision CCTV cameras to check illegal sand extraction at the meeting.
All steps would be taken to tighten security at the check-posts at Shiroor and Hosangadi to prevent illegal transportation of sand, Ms. Francis said. Shilpa Nag, Assistant Commissioner, Amarnath, Deputy Conservator of Forests, and Kodandaramaiah, District Mines and Geology Officer, were present.
