The police have arrested two persons in connection with the theft of ₹22 lakh in cash and half a kg of silver from a house at Volakadu here on Thursday.

A press release issued by the police on Saturday said a woman named Sunanda Manikya Patil had lodged a complaint stating that ₹22 lakh in cash and some silver were stolen from her house between 12.15 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday.

In her complaint lodged at Udupi Town police station, Ms. Patil stated that she suspected her husband Manikya Patil’s relative Atul Bagne from Sangli, and his associate, of being behind the theft.

Acting on her complaint, the police, with the help of the Goa police and the Konkan Railway police, nabbed Bagne, 24, at the railway station in Madgaon in Goa on the same night, while they arrested his associate, Sandeep Shinde, 25, at the railway station in Byndoor on Friday.

The police seized ₹21.84 lakh and half a kilogram of silver from them. Both the accused were produced in court here, which remanded them in police custody for three days.

About five months ago, Bagne worked in Manikya Patil’s shop for a couple of months. He was removed from the job because of his apparent insincerity. Subsequently, he and Shinde, who both hailed from Sangli in Maharashtra and were friends, hatched the plan.

Cash prize

Nisha James, Superintendent of Police, gave a cash prize to the police team for cracking the case within 24 hours of the complaint being lodged.
